Whiskey made from Jack Daniel’s is not the same as whiskey made from bourbon. At 140 proof, or 70% alcohol, the alcohol content of the wine is 70%. Some Tennessee whiskeys are blended with bourbon, rye, or other whiskeys, but Jack Daniel’s is a straight whiskey made from a mash bill of 80% corn, 12% rye, and 8% malted barley. The product meets the regulatory criteria for classification as a straight bourbon, though the company disavows this classification and markets it simply as Tennessee whiskey rather than as Tennessee bourbon. Jack Daniel’s home county of Moore is a dry county, so the product is not available for purchase at stores or restaurants within the county. It is produced in Lynchburg, Tennessee, by the Jack Daniel Distillery, which has been owned by the Brown-Forman Corporation since 1956.
